To the mountains

I am continually amazed by the diverse environment in my new state, Arizona.

After a long week on call, I decided on a lark to see if I could find lodging in the White Mountains.

A recent episode of Arizona Highways had highlighted this area and it really looked interesting, especially the part about being an average of 20 degrees cooler than the Phoenix area.

I was quite surprised to find lodging at a Holiday Inn Express in Show Low, AZ.

The drive to Show Low via Globe was very scenic, but a bit nerve wracking a few times as I was driving an Explorer which feels like it will turn over on the most gradual of curves. The accommodations were very nice, with free wireless internet, and we were even able to have dinner at Charlie Clark's Steak House the restaurant featured in the Arizona Highways episode. The restaurant was nothing to write home about, but the service was good and food average.

All in all it was a great trip and I expect to return again soon.

A new year

I cannot recall a more awesome beginning to a new year. The weather here is simply beautiful. My mind is filled with positive thoughts. My heart if filled with love. Can it get any better than this? I think so, which for those that know me, realize is a miracle in itself. As I stand at the edge of the rest of my life, I feel stronger mentally and physically than I have in some time. I look forward to the challenges with a renewed energy. I look forward to the upcoming adventures with a renewed enthusiasm. The music has truly returned. Let's dance.

Weathering the Storm

I have been teasing my wife the past 24 hours, calling her a "hurricane magnet". As I ponder my past though, I seem to be the "her-i-cane" magnet, while she is really a "him-i-cane" magnet. Although I barely remember it, I do remember my family evacuating Lumbertin, TX, to avoid the worst of hurricane Carla in 1961. The eye of hurricane Alicia passed right over my home in the Houston, TX suburbs in 1983. Before leaving the Houston metropolitan area I also experienced a Harvey like storm in 1995 named Allison , by the time it arrived in the Houston area it was more of a tropical storm that lingered and caused significant flooding. With the exception of several significant typhoons, whose names I either never knew, or more probably have forgotten, while on a U.S. Navy destroyer in the South Pacific during the early 1970's, the storms I mentioned were all before moving to the Phoenix metropolitan area, where aside from 120 degree summers and a few Ha...
